Cleveland winters are no joke. Between the lake-effect snow, freeze-thaw cycles, and ice storms that roll in off Lake Erie, your roof takes a beating from November through March. Now that winter is winding down, it's time to assess the damage before spring showers — and potential storms — reveal problems you didn't know you had.
At YICN Roofing, we inspect hundreds of Northeast Ohio homes every spring. Here's exactly what we look for — and what you should too.
1. Inspect for Ice Dam Damage
Ice dams are one of the most common — and most damaging — winter roofing problems in Cleveland. They form when heat escapes from your attic, melts snow on the upper roof, and that water refreezes at the cold eaves. The backed-up water can seep under shingles and into your home.
After winter, look for:
Water stains on ceilings or walls near the roofline
Peeling paint or bubbling drywall in upper rooms
Lifted, cracked, or missing shingles along the eaves
Damaged or bent gutters from heavy ice weight
If you see any of these signs, call a professional roofer for an inspection immediately. Ice dam damage that goes unaddressed through spring will only get worse.
2. Check Your Shingles
Cleveland's freeze-thaw cycles — where temperatures swing above and below freezing repeatedly — are brutal on asphalt shingles. The constant expansion and contraction causes shingles to crack, curl, and lose granules over time.
From the ground (or safely from a ladder), look for:
Missing or visibly broken shingles
Shingles that are curling at the edges or buckling in the middle
Dark patches where granules have worn away
Granules collecting in your gutters or downspouts
A few missing shingles can be repaired quickly and affordably. But if granule loss is widespread, it may be time to start planning for a full roof replacement before the next winter season.
3. Clean and Inspect Your Gutters
Winter leaves gutters full of debris, and the weight of ice and snow often bends or pulls them away from the fascia. Clogged gutters in spring are a major cause of water damage — when April showers arrive, backed-up gutters can overflow directly into your foundation or siding.
Your spring gutter checklist:
Remove all leaves, twigs, and debris from gutters and downspouts
Check that gutters are firmly attached and haven't pulled away from the roofline
Look for sagging sections or visible cracks and holes
Run water through the downspouts to confirm proper drainage
Make sure downspouts direct water at least 6 feet away from your foundation
4. Inspect Flashing Around Chimneys, Vents, and Skylights
Flashing is the metal material that seals the joints where your roof meets vertical surfaces — chimneys, vents, pipes, and skylights. It's one of the most common sources of roof leaks, especially after a harsh Cleveland winter.
Check for flashing that is:
Lifted, bent, or separated from the surface it seals
Cracked or deteriorating caulk/sealant around the edges
Rusted or corroded metal
Even a small gap in flashing can allow water to penetrate your roof deck and cause serious structural damage over time. This is a repair that's easy and inexpensive when caught early.
5. Check Your Attic for Signs of Winter Damage
Your attic tells the story of what your roof went through this winter. Head up there with a flashlight and look for:
Water stains or dark spots on the roof decking — signs of past or current leaks
Mold or mildew growth — a sign of moisture infiltration
Daylight visible through the roof boards — a major red flag
Damaged or compressed insulation — reduces energy efficiency and traps moisture
Blocked soffit or ridge vents — proper ventilation prevents future ice dams
6. Trim Overhanging Tree Branches
Cleveland gets its share of spring storms, and branches that survived winter may be weakened. Tree limbs hanging over your roof are a major liability — one strong spring storm and they could come crashing down.
Trim any branches within 6 feet of your roofline. This also reduces the amount of leaf debris that ends up in your gutters throughout spring and summer.
7. Schedule a Professional Spring Roof Inspection
Even if everything looks fine from the ground, a professional inspection can catch problems that aren't visible to the untrained eye. At YICN Roofing, our free spring roof inspections cover every aspect of your roof system — shingles, flashing, gutters, ventilation, and structural integrity.
We serve the entire Cleveland metro and Northeast Ohio area including Beachwood, Bedford, Solon, Strongsville, Parma, Lakewood, Westlake, and surrounding communities.
